Program Identity & Fit

This is an academic, university-affiliated neurosurgery program based at Rhode Island Hospital (the only Level 1 Trauma Center in southern New England) and Hasbro Children's Hospital, offering full subspecialty breadth including cerebrovascular/endovascular neurosurgery, complex spine and spinal oncology, pediatric and fetal neurosurgery, functional/epilepsy surgery, and skull-base surgery. Research is deeply embedded through a dedicated PGY-5 research year, an in-folded CAST-approved endovascular fellowship option, and access to Brown's neuroengineering/neuroscience infrastructure (brain-machine interface, optogenetics, computational neuromodulation labs) alongside hospital-based basic science facilities in the Aldrich Research Building. Graduate outcomes split between competitive subspecialty fellowships (endovascular, complex spine, functional/stereotactic) and both academic appointments and private practice, indicating the program produces broadly trained neurosurgeons rather than funneling toward a single track.
