Program Identity & Fit

This is a rural, community-based internal medicine residency at a 129-bed acute-care hospital serving a medically underserved coalfield region of Southwest Virginia, with a mission explicitly tied to expanding primary and chronic-disease care access for an underserved population. The curriculum blends hands-on, high-autonomy inpatient training at Norton with subspecialty exposure at larger urban tertiary affiliates (Holston Valley, Bristol Regional), giving residents both rural general-medicine responsibility and tertiary-level subspecialty rotations. Research is present but minor (two-week blocks in PGY-2/PGY-3) and not central to the program's identity; the majority of graduates become hospitalists, though a meaningful minority pursue fellowships (cardiology, ID, heme/onc, palliative care, nephrology), and the program frames itself as preparing residents "for whichever path" while emphasizing resourcefulness in caring for patients with limited specialty access.
