Program Identity & Fit

Virginia Mason is a tertiary-referral community-academic hybrid in downtown Seattle whose identity is inseparable from the Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS), a Lean-based quality improvement culture that permeates clinical operations, resident education, and a dedicated Leadership in Quality Improvement Pathway culminating in a capstone QI project. The program pairs high-acuity subspecialty care (closed ICU, comprehensive stroke center, GI and cardiovascular centers of excellence, transplant and complex pancreaticobiliary referrals) with a genuinely underserved continuity clinic at Eastgate Public Health Center, giving categorical and primary care residents parallel exposure to complex tertiary referrals and safety-net, multilingual, uninsured populations. Research is present and supported (Benaroya Research Institute, Center for Health Care Improvement Science, resident case reports and QI abstracts) but functions mainly as an extension of the QI/systems-improvement mission rather than a bench-science pipeline. Career preparation is explicitly tri-directional—primary care, hospital medicine, or fellowship—with track-specific curricula, elective customization, and structured social-justice/health-equity content woven into didactics and continuity clinic experience.
