The University of Florida Internal Medicine Residency is a large academic university program based at Shands Hospital and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, combining tertiary/quaternary referral care with a high-volume VA system serving veterans across North Florida and South Georgia. The program offers an unusually broad set of named tracks—Research (ABIM Research Pathway), Primary Care, Global Health, Clinical Informatics, and Clinician Educator—signaling a deliberate structure for individualized career pathing rather than a single generalist pipeline. Research is institutionally supported through the Emerging Pathogens Institute and a formal physician-scientist pathway, while resident-led councils (Global Health & Community Engagement, Gator Councils, HAC) reflect an emphasis on resident agency, advocacy, and quality/informatics-driven practice improvement. The program values residents who will engage deeply with a specific longitudinal interest area (education, informatics, global health, primary care, or research) rather than pursuing a purely undifferentiated clinical track.
