Program Identity & Fit

This is a mid-sized university-affiliated Internal Medicine residency in Phoenix built around two anchor sites: Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, a quaternary referral and Level I trauma center, and the Phoenix VA Healthcare System, exposing residents to a medically complex, underserved and diverse patient population. The program supports multiple career paths equally—primary ambulatory care, hospital medicine, subspecialty fellowship, and academic medicine—reflected in a customizable curriculum, a dedicated Primary Care Track, a developing Rural Health Track, and access to a broad internal fellowship pipeline (cardiology, GI, heme/onc, pulm/crit care, ID, endocrine, and more). Scholarly activity is individualized rather than mandatory-intensive: all residents complete a project (QI, case-based, clinical research, or medical education) with faculty mentorship, CITI training, conference travel funding, and an optional dedicated Research Rotation for those pursuing deeper work. Distinctive structural features include a formal POCUS/procedure curriculum integrated into wards and elective months, strong resident-as-educator programming (with PIE certificate track and chief resident positions), and an institutional emphasis on wellness, workload control, and resident involvement in program governance.
