Reading Hospital's Internal Medicine Residency is a large community-based academic program built around a high-acuity, high-volume hospital with the busiest emergency department in Pennsylvania, offering broad exposure to complex and undifferentiated disease. The program is distinguished by six in-house fellowships (Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Critical Care) totaling 17 positions, giving residents an unusually direct in-house pipeline into subspecialty training, alongside flexible tracks for those pursuing generalist, hospitalist, or ambulatory careers. It holds ACGME Osteopathic Recognition, one of few IM programs to retain this dual-pathway structure, and offers distinctive niche experiences including point-of-care ultrasound, opioid use disorder management, Street Medicine outreach, and osteopathic manipulative medicine application in clinical practice. The program appears to value residents who can move fluidly between high-volume acute care and longitudinal skill-building toward either fellowship or generalist practice, with an explicit portfolio-based educational process reflecting emphasis on structured professional development.
