Program Identity & Fit

St. Francis-Emory Healthcare's Internal Medicine Residency is a young, community-based ACGME program in Columbus, GA, founded in 2022 and now at full strength with 10 categorical residents per class. Training occurs in a community hospital setting emphasizing evidence-based medicine across office-based, inpatient, and subspecialty care, with a POCUS curriculum and cross-training alongside a newly added Psychiatry program for consult services. A dedicated PGY-2 research block with protected time supports posters, case reports, QI, and clinical projects, and residents have presented at ACP, ASN, and CHEST conferences, though most graduates pursue hospitalist and hospital medicine positions with a smaller subset entering fellowships (pulmonary/critical care, GI, heme-onc, endocrinology, geriatrics, ID). The program explicitly frames its mission around community service, health disparity reduction, and physician wellness, positioning itself as a practical, patient-care-focused training ground rather than a research- or subspecialty-driven institution.
