Prime West Consortium-Shasta Regional Medical Center Program

Program Identity & Fit

This is a new (2023-launched), community-based internal medicine program at a 226-bed Prime Healthcare hospital in Redding, CA, sponsored by the Prime West Consortium and explicitly mission-driven toward addressing socioeconomic disparities and physician shortages in an underserved Northern California region. Clinical training spans inpatient medicine, a recognized cardiovascular program (chest pain center, cath lab, TAVR), GI procedural exposure, and continuity clinics across community, VA, and post-acute sites, with a curriculum built to balance graduated autonomy with supervision. Research is present but modest in scale (QI projects, ACP/CUSM abstracts, journal club) rather than a defining feature, and the program explicitly states its aim is to produce competent hospitalists and primary care physicians while also supporting residents pursuing fellowship. As an inaugural-cohort program, it emphasizes close faculty mentorship, resident input into shaping program culture, and recruitment of physicians committed to serving the local/regional community.
