Program Identity & Fit

OHSU's IM residency is a university-based, quaternary academic program that trains general internists across a deliberately layered set of clinical environments—the sole academic health center in Oregon, the adjoined Portland VA, an FQHC serving homeless and underserved populations (Old Town Clinic/Central City Concern), and Kaiser Permanente for outpatient-focused primary care exposure. The program's identity is built around named tracks rather than a single mold: a Primary Care Track with off-site preceptorships at Indian Health Service and tribal/rural clinics, a Global Health Scholars Program with a longstanding Botswana partnership, a POCUS pathway, and a Physician-Scientist Training Program built on the ABIM Research Pathway with guaranteed fellowship placement and protected research time (currently Hematology/Oncology only). Research is deeply embedded via OHSU's extensive core facilities and Knight Cancer/Cardiovascular Institutes, but the categorical program itself emphasizes flexible pathways toward primary care, hospital medicine, or subspecialty fellowship rather than mandating scholarship for all residents. The program values residents drawn to health equity, advocacy for underserved and immigrant/refugee/Indigenous populations, and longitudinal engagement with a specific track or mission rather than generalist breadth alone.
