Mercy Hospital Springfield's internal medicine residency is a brand-new program launching in 2027 within a large, faith-based, tertiary-referral hospital system that serves as the region's Level I trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and only pediatric cancer/burn/NICU referral hub for southwest Missouri and parts of Arkansas. The program is being built explicitly to address Missouri's physician workforce shortage and to retain residents in southwest Missouri after training, reflecting a mission-driven, community-retention orientation rather than a research-flagship identity. Clinical training will occur in a high-acuity, high-volume community/tertiary hybrid environment (579 staffed beds, ~75,000 ED visits, ACO-affiliated ambulatory network, MSU Care Clinic for underinsured patients) with progressive resident autonomy, but as an inaugural program it currently lacks an established subspecialty fellowship pipeline, named tracks, or a demonstrated resident research infrastructure comparable to Mercy's established St. Louis or Arkansas programs. Given Mercy's stated goals (workforce pipeline, physician retention, underserved/charity-care mission), the program appears to value applicants motivated by community-embedded, mission-aligned primary and hospital-based care rather than pure academic subspecialization.
