Program Identity & Fit

MLKCH's Internal Medicine program is a community-based, safety-net residency in South Los Angeles explicitly organized around health equity and care for a majority-Medicaid, majority-Black-and-Latino population with high chronic disease burden. Clinical training combines a hands-on community hospital base with subspecialty rotations at tertiary/quaternary partner institutions (Cedars-Sinai, Harbor-UCLA, UCLA, UC Irvine), giving residents both frontline community exposure and access to academic-center subspecialty experience. A longitudinal Social Medicine curriculum and a Street Medicine program delivering primary care to unhoused patients are core, distinguishing features rather than electives, and the 4+1 block schedule protects time for quality improvement and research. The program explicitly values compassion, adaptability, and commitment to underserved and safety-net populations over pure academic pedigree.
