Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, HCA-affiliated internal medicine program in Blacksburg, VA, originally founded as an AOA program in 2008 and converted to ACGME accreditation in 2017, operating through a VCOM osteopathic consortium and drawing on a stable, largely home-grown faculty base. The clinical environment combines an HCA community hospital with rotations at the Salem VA Medical Center, giving residents exposure to both community and veteran patient populations, and continuity clinic is built around a Yale outpatient curriculum with a 4+1 scheduling structure. Research is institutionally supported through HCA's national data infrastructure and research coordinators, but the program's stronger identity markers are clinical breadth, POCUS/simulation training, and a fellowship-placement track record spanning cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, pulmonology/critical care, geriatrics, palliative care, and sports medicine.
