Hackensack University Medical Center's Internal Medicine Residency is a newly launched, university-affiliated program built around an 800+ bed tertiary flagship hospital tied to the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, offering in-house fellowships across nine subspecialties (cardiology, GI, hem/onc, pulm/CC, ID, endocrinology, geriatrics) and specialty centers of scale (John Theurer Cancer Center with 350+ trials, a nationally recognized Heart and Vascular Hospital). Its identity blends a "community practice" ethos of relationship-based, humanistic care with tertiary/quaternary clinical exposure, structured through an innovative 6+2 ambulatory-inpatient schedule designed for continuity. Career preparation is explicitly pluripotent (primary care, hospitalist, subspecialty, academic) but the program backs this with named tracks—Medical Education/Clinician-Educator, Primary Care, and POCUS—plus a resident-led research committee, financial support for scholarly dissemination, and QI infrastructure embedded in the resident-run clinic. As an inaugural program still building its culture, it emphasizes innovation, teamwork, and resident partnership in shaping GME rather than a long-established, fixed identity.
