Fairview Hospital's Internal Medicine Program blends a community-hospital feel with the institutional backing of Cleveland Clinic, training 36 categorical and 2 preliminary residents in a hospitalist-heavy model where residents serve as first responders for codes and rapid responses from day one. Clinical training is concentrated at a single tertiary-care, level II trauma community site on Cleveland's West Side, with graded autonomy (night float, ICU, jeopardy coverage) and a longitudinal outpatient clinic across three ambulatory sites. Research is a required, structured component—every categorical resident completes a mentored scholarly project beginning in PGY2, culminating in an annual Research Day, though protected time is capped at a few weeks per year, positioning it as expected rather than identity-defining. Graduate outcomes split across hospitalist practice, primary care, and subspecialty fellowship (cardiology, GI, heme/onc, pulm/critical care), reflecting a program that values resident autonomy in acute-care leadership, incremental scholarly output, and flexibility across career paths rather than a singular academic or research trajectory.
