This is a newly launched, community-based Internal Medicine residency at a large (615-bed) BayCare tertiary hospital in Tampa, explicitly framed around a "train to retain" mission to build a physician pipeline for West Central Florida rather than around national fellowship placement or research output. The curriculum is a standard categorical structure with broad subspecialty exposure, longitudinal continuity clinic, and a single dedicated research block, with an academic half-day model and close resident-faculty mentorship pairing rather than large basic-science infrastructure. As an inaugural class, program identity is still being shaped by residents themselves, and recruitment messaging emphasizes family-like culture, local/community commitment, mission alignment, and geographic ties to Tampa Bay over competitive academic pedigree. BayCare's broader system is investing heavily in expanding academic and research capacity (Northwestern Medicine collaboration, new academic corridor), suggesting the program's research and academic identity may grow substantially beyond its current modest baseline.
