Baptist Health-UAMS Internal Medicine is a community-based residency on the Baptist Health Medical Center-North Little Rock campus, staffed largely by UAMS-appointed faculty and built explicitly to address Arkansas's primary care physician shortage. The training environment centers on a 225-bed community hospital serving a population exceeding 250,000 (with a substantial elderly demographic), supplemented by access to UAMS's academic resources and simulation center, giving residents a blended community-clinical/academic-adjacent experience rather than a tertiary-quaternary referral one. Scholarly activity is a structured but modest requirement (two projects, one QI-focused) rather than a research-driven identity, and the program explicitly supports three post-residency paths - primary care, hospital medicine, or subspecialty fellowship - with faculty mentorship oriented toward whichever the resident chooses. The program values well-rounded clinical competence, life-work balance, and community-oriented practice over research output or subspecialty prestige.
