This UAB-affiliated Internal Medicine residency, based at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, is a community-based, primary-care-oriented program that trains 20 residents at a time and supplies a substantial share of the region's internists. Continuity of care is structurally embedded: residents follow their own emergency department and referral patients throughout training, supported by a large clinical faculty of over 55 board-certified physicians and weekly Grand Rounds featuring visiting professors. The program explicitly measures its impact through primary care retention, with roughly 70% of graduates remaining in Alabama and about 30% staying in Montgomery for primary care practice, and it positions itself as the only internal medicine training site in the state outside Birmingham and Mobile. Research is not emphasized; the identity centers on producing community-grounded general internists rather than subspecialists or academicians.
