Atlantic Health Morristown is a large community-based, university-affiliated (Sidney Kimmel/Thomas Jefferson, Rowan, SGU) internal medicine program anchored at a high-acuity, high-volume tertiary referral center that manages complex cardiac, pulmonary, and critical care pathology without a critical care fellowship on site, giving residents unusual procedural autonomy in closed MICU/CCU units. The 6+2 inpatient-outpatient structure, longitudinal primary care panel with a second-site clinic option, POCUS/simulation curriculum, and strong hospitalist retention culture reflect a program built around producing well-rounded generalists rather than a research-first identity. Scholarly activity is required but framed flexibly (QI projects, clinical vignettes acceptable), and roughly half of graduates pursue fellowship (with placements spanning cardiology, GI, pulmonary/critical care, nephrology, heme-onc and others) while a comparable share choose hospitalist or primary care careers, many staying within the Atlantic Health system itself. The program explicitly values fit, collegiality, longitudinal mentorship, and holistic evaluation over pure metrics, and offers loan repayment incentives tied to staying in the community as a primary care or hospitalist physician.
