Program Identity & Fit

UVM's Family Medicine Residency is an academically-affiliated, full-spectrum training program anchored at Family Medicine Milton, a rural continuity practice 15 miles from Burlington, with inpatient, obstetric, and procedural training layered through the UVM Medical Center (the state's only Level 1 trauma center) and the Community Health Center of Burlington, a federally-qualified health center serving refugee, homeless, and underserved populations. The program emphasizes full-scope practice - low-risk obstetrics, addiction medicine/MOUD clinics, gender-affirming care, POCUS, and office procedures (colposcopy, LARC placement, vasectomy) - rather than narrow subspecialization, with roughly a quarter of recent graduates continuing obstetric practice. Career outcomes split evenly between Vermont-based community/rural practice and graduates dispersing nationally and globally, with a meaningful subset pursuing competitive fellowships (sports medicine, palliative care, hospice, LGBTQIA+ health) or academic faculty roles at UVM itself. Research is present but positioned as a complement to clinical training rather than a defining pillar, and the program appears to value residents drawn to longitudinal, relationship-based primary care in a small, tightly-knit practice environment rather than high-volume subspecialty exposure.
