This is a rural-track family medicine program in which residents spend their first year training in Bismarck before relocating to Hettinger, a small-hospital, frontier-medicine setting where a 4:1 attending-to-resident ratio and weekly ER call produce an intensely hands-on, generalist scope of practice spanning inpatient, obstetric, and emergency care. The program's identity is explicitly rural and community-embedded, structured around the North Dakota Board of Medical Examiners and legislated preference for UND graduates, reflecting a mission tied to serving the state's rural and underserved populations rather than academic subspecialization. Research exists at the institutional level (INBRE, Frank Low Research Day, rural health disparities work) but is not woven into the residency's own curriculum, which is built almost entirely around broad clinical rotations rather than scholarly output.
