Program Identity & Fit

This is a longstanding, dually-accredited (ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition) community-based Family Medicine residency built on the combined resources of a large community teaching hospital (University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, a 733-bed Level 1 trauma center) and the academic infrastructure of Michigan State University's MD and DO colleges. The program deliberately maintains a 50/50 MD/DO class balance and offers two distinct continuity-clinic sites - an urban Lansing site serving city and university patients, and a rural Mason site serving farming communities, factory workers, and adult foster care populations - giving residents a genuine urban/rural full-spectrum experience. Scholarly activity is required and longitudinally mentored but framed as practical (QI, curriculum development, literature review) rather than hypothesis-driven bench research, and the program supports named tracks (Obstetrics/Advanced Maternity Care, a Sports Medicine fellowship pathway) alongside integrated behavioral health and pharmacy teams. Graduate outcomes skew toward local, full-spectrum outpatient and OB-inclusive practice, with over half of current department faculty having trained in the combined or parent programs, signaling a strong community-retention and "grow-your-own" identity.
