Program Identity & Fit

This is the second-oldest family medicine residency in the country and the largest in New York State, structured around four distinct tracks (Urban/Jericho Road, Urban/ECMC, Suburban/Amherst, and Rural/Olean) that each anchor residents to a specific patient population and continuity clinic rather than a single generic experience. The program's identity is defined by breadth of clinical exposure across a hospital consortium spanning a level 1 trauma center, a children's hospital, a rural community hospital, and a refugee-focused urban health center serving one of the largest refugee resettlement populations in the country. Research is structurally embedded but not the program's driving identity: residents complete a PGY-2 quality-improvement project and a PGY-3 clinical inquiry project within a department housing its own Primary Care Research Institute, and additional scholarly tracks exist for interested residents. Distinctive features include a fully-funded, multi-country Global Health Scholars concentration and an Academic Faculty Development concentration, signaling a program that values residents who want to specialize their generalist training toward underserved, global, rural, or academic-teaching paths rather than pursuing a single narrow career mold.
