Program Identity & Fit

The Regional Center for Border Health Teaching Health Center is a community health center-based Family Medicine residency explicitly built around service to underserved rural, tribal, and U.S.-Mexico border populations in the Somerton/San Luis/Yuma corridor of Arizona. Its curriculum is a standard broad-based family medicine continuum (inpatient, obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics, behavioral health, emergency medicine) delivered through community clinical sites such as the San Luis Medical Mall and San Luis Walk-In Clinic rather than a tertiary academic medical center, with dedicated Community Medicine/Research blocks in PGY2 and PGY3. As a Teaching Health Center, its stated mission and vision center on health equity, integrated patient-centered care, and training physicians who will remain committed to rural/border and tribal community practice rather than subspecialization. The program values applicants oriented toward direct primary care service in low-resource, cross-border, and tribal communities over research or fellowship-driven trajectories.
