Memorial Hospital of South Bend is a long-established, unopposed 10-10-10 community family medicine program built around full-spectrum training - high-volume inpatient adult medicine, pediatrics through Beacon Children's Hospital, high-volume obstetrics, and a longitudinal ultrasound/procedures curriculum - with residents functioning as the sole trainees in the hospital and carrying substantial hands-on autonomy. The program offers multiple named curricular tracks (Care of the Underserved, Rural, Health Services Management with an embedded Indiana University MPA, Hospitalist, Sports Medicine, Geriatrics) plus four fellowship pathways (Sports Medicine, Obstetrics, Health Service Management, and a new Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship), signaling strong support for individualized post-residency direction rather than a single dominant career track. A decades-long international rotation tradition (with salary continuation during travel) and dedicated FQHC/street medicine/refugee clinic experiences point to a genuine service and underserved-care orientation woven into training rather than an elective afterthought. Research exists mainly as an elective and QI/scholarly activity rather than a driving institutional priority, and outcomes emphasis is on producing broadly competent full-spectrum family physicians ready to practice in varied settings, including rural and underserved communities.
