Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, unopposed rural family medicine program that splits training between an urban intern year at Methodist Hospital of Sacramento and PGY-2/3 rural immersion in Grass Valley, anchored by continuity care at Chapa-De Indian Health, a Tribal Federally Qualified Health Center. The curriculum is explicitly built around full-spectrum rural practice: high outpatient procedural volume, integrated medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, global health and reservation health experiences, and graduated autonomy without 24-hour call. Research is not emphasized; instead the program prioritizes clinical readiness for independent rural practice, with electives (OMT, palliative care, hospital medicine, sports medicine) supporting that goal and explicit post-residency placement pathways into rural Northern California. Faculty composition (addiction medicine, women's health, lifestyle medicine, OMT) and resident interests (harm reduction, palliative care, underserved and tribal health) signal a program that values mission-driven, hands-on generalists over research-focused or subspecialty-bound candidates.
