Program Identity & Fit

The Greenfield Family Medicine Residency is a newly established (first graduates in 2024), university-affiliated but rural, community-based program—the only Family Medicine training site in Western Massachusetts—built explicitly to serve the underserved, "rurban" populations of Franklin County. Training is anchored in outpatient primary care at a small community hospital (Baystate Franklin Medical Center, 89 beds) with limited call/night float and six months of elective time, reflecting a curriculum designed around broad-scope generalist practice, procedural skill-building, and resident wellness rather than subspecialty or high-acuity tertiary exposure. Research exists at the health-system level (UMass Chan-Baystate research infrastructure, Quantitative Methods Core) but is not embedded in the residency's own stated curriculum, which instead emphasizes evidence-based medicine, community engagement, and work-life harmony. As an inaugural, small program (4 residents/year), it appears to value residents who want to help shape a new program's culture and are drawn to rural/underserved full-scope family practice rather than a fellowship pipeline.
