Henry Ford Wyandotte is a community-based, osteopathically-rooted emergency medicine program (originally developed under AOA/ACOEP structures, now ACGME-accredited) built around 1:1 resident-attending staffing at a Level III trauma center supplemented by a freestanding ED and a heavy rotation schedule through tertiary and specialty sites (Henry Ford Detroit MICU, Children's Hospital of Michigan, DMC toxicology, Hurley PICU, and R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma in Baltimore). The program emphasizes progressive autonomy toward independent ED management by PGY3, a structured longitudinal ultrasound curriculum with a superuser pathway, and EMS/disaster-medicine mentorship for interested residents. Scholarly activity is present and supported (PGY1 QI curriculum, conference presentations, historical publications) but is not central to program identity; graduate outcomes overwhelmingly favor community and academic-community clinical practice, with only occasional fellowship placements (toxicology, EMS, ultrasound, pain). The program values well-rounded community emergency physicians comfortable managing high-acuity and undifferentiated patients independently across varied practice settings, including rural/community EDs without on-site subspecialty backup.
