The University of Mississippi Medical Center anesthesiology residency is the training program of the state's only academic medical center, situated within a Level I trauma center and quaternary referral hospital that serves as Mississippi's primary safety-net and specialty-care destination. The four-year, competency-based curriculum begins with a structured intern year emphasizing critical care, point-of-care ultrasound, and a dedicated "Anesthesia Bootcamp" before progressing into subspecialty rotations spanning cardiovascular, obstetric, pediatric, neurosurgical, and regional anesthesia, with the CA3 year allowing residents to tailor training toward general practice or a subspecialty concentration. In-house fellowships in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, pain medicine, and pediatric anesthesiology signal a program built to feed its own advanced training pipeline while also preparing residents for community and private practice through dedicated rotations. As the sole academic anesthesiology program in Mississippi, it appears to value residents comfortable functioning as the definitive tertiary-care and trauma resource for an underserved, largely rural state population.
