The University of Minnesota is a large, university-based academic anesthesiology program (10 residents per class, 40 total) anchored at a quaternary care medical center that draws complex regional, national, and international referrals, supplemented by training across Hennepin County Medical Center, the VA, Regions Hospital, and Masonic Children's Hospital. The program operates on a care-team model with CRNAs, emphasizes a robust six-month ICU experience, and builds subspecialty depth through named fellowship pathways in cardiothoracic, pediatric, critical care, and regional/acute pain anesthesia, with strong internal fellowship placement into its own advanced programs. Distinctive infrastructure includes a Combined Pathway Program allowing MBA/MHA/MPH degrees during residency, a Resident Leadership Academy, a dedicated Resident Researcher Pathway with up to six months of protected CA-3 research time, and an extensive simulation and point-of-care ultrasound curriculum. The program values collaborative, non-competitive culture, protected didactic time, leadership development, and residents oriented toward either fellowship subspecialization or physician-leadership tracks rather than pure private practice.
