The University of Maryland Anesthesiology Residency is a large, academically-oriented university program anchored by the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, a flagship quaternary medical center with a top-14 NIH-funded research department, and an exceptionally high-acuity, high case-mix patient population (99th percentile CMS case mix nationally). Training spans trauma, cardiothoracic, obstetric, transplant, and pediatric subspecialty rotations, supplemented by community hospital experience for ambulatory/outpatient exposure, and structured elective time allows tailoring toward research, community practice, or international outreach. Research is embedded through a mandatory CA-3 senior project, an optional dedicated research block, and access to translational/basic science faculty and a perioperative data registry (SCORE/PDW), reflecting institutional investment in scholarly output alongside clinical training. Graduate outcomes show a strong, roughly even split between competitive subspecialty fellowships (cardiothoracic, regional/pain, critical care, pediatric, OB) and private practice, indicating the program values clinical breadth, resilience in high-acuity settings, and flexibility across academic and community-based career paths.
