UConn's anesthesiology program is a university-affiliated, multi-hospital training model built on a merger with Hartford Hospital's historic anesthesiology program, giving residents rotations across four hospitals (academic, community, pediatric, and level 1 trauma sites) and three private practice groups within a 10-mile radius. The defining structural feature is a deliberately small class size (13) relative to a very high case volume (60,000+ annually), which the program explicitly frames as maximizing resident access to prime teaching cases rather than filling service gaps. Research is present but not central: residents complete a required scholarly review project with faculty mentorship, and roughly half pursue fellowships (cardiac, regional, pediatric, pain, critical care), with in-house pathways at Hartford Hospital and Saint Francis, while many graduates are hired directly into the affiliated private practices. The program values clinical versatility and adaptability gained from working across differing practice cultures, and emphasizes a close-knit, camaraderie-driven resident culture within a mid-size cohort.
