Program Identity & Fit

This is a brand-new, ACGME-accredited (Sept. 2025) four-year anesthesiology residency at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, an Appalachian academic medical center serving Huntington, WV and surrounding rural West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southern Ohio. As an inaugural program (first cohort July 2026), it is built around a small cohort (up to four residents per year) training across Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary's, with an explicit institutional research infrastructure (biomedical, clinical/translational, and health-systems research tracks) that residents are encouraged to engage with alongside pain management and perioperative medicine faculty scholarship. The program's holistic review process, emphasis on community outreach experience, and rural/underserved regional mission signal a preference for applicants oriented toward Appalachian and community-based anesthesia practice rather than a subspecialty-fellowship pipeline. Given its newness, the program is still establishing its clinical identity and culture, offering ground-floor involvement rather than an established track record.
