MacNeal's Transitional Year program is a community-hospital-based launch pad, university-affiliated through Loyola, built to serve residents heading into advanced specialty training rather than to cultivate research or academic careers in its own right. The curriculum is deliberately flexible - core inpatient blocks in internal medicine, ICU, general surgery and family medicine paired with 14 weeks of electives - designed to let residents shape a year around the demands of whatever specialty they matched into for PGY2. Its most distinctive feature is the dedicated joint Transitional Year-Ophthalmology internship (4 of 14 spots) with a customized, front-loaded ophthalmology rotation schedule and access to Loyola's ophthalmology simulation center, signaling a program built with procedural/surgical subspecialty-bound interns specifically in mind. Graduate lists show heavy representation in ophthalmology, radiology, anesthesiology, dermatology and other competitive specialties, indicating the program values applicants who already have a clear, often non-primary-care, advanced specialty match secured.
