Program Identity & Fit

This is a flagship university-based general surgery residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, built explicitly to produce future academic surgeons and subspecialty leaders rather than community general surgeons. Training spans a tertiary/quaternary academic hub (NYP-Cornell), a dedicated surgical oncology experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and acute-care/trauma exposure at Jamaica Hospital in an underserved Queens population, giving residents a deliberate contrast between high-resource cancer-center subspecialty operating and safety-net acute care. Research is structurally embedded: nearly all residents without prior significant research are expected to complete a two-year dedicated research fellowship, with access to Rockefeller University, MSK, and a Master's in Clinical Epidemiology, and outcomes data show near-universal placement into competitive fellowships (surgical oncology, cardiothoracic, colorectal, endocrine, transplant, vascular) at top academic centers. The program's chief resident structure, MSK operative rotations, and administrative chief roles signal it values residents oriented toward subspecialization, scholarly productivity, and long-term academic surgical careers.
