Program Identity & Fit

This is a five-year combined categorical Pediatrics/Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation program jointly sponsored by Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware, producing triple-board-eligible graduates (General Pediatrics, PM&R, and Pediatric Rehabilitation). Training centers on a high-acuity, quaternary pediatric rehabilitation environment - the region's only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and an East Coast referral hub for ventilator-dependent quadriplegic children - supported by a full interdisciplinary team (orthotics, gait lab, rehabilitation engineering, CORP outpatient continuation program) rather than a generalist physiatry exposure. The structure interleaves pediatrics and rehabilitation from year one, with rotations also at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, reflecting deliberate design for a physician who will manage medically complex children with disability across the lifespan of childhood illness. Research is embedded but not obligatory for this specific track, drawing on Nemours' sizeable NIH-ranked pediatric research infrastructure (orthopedics, neuroscience, cardiovascular, pharmacogenomics) and offering formal avenues (NSURP, Graduate Education and Research Program) for residents who want to engage further.
