Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, hospital-anchored pediatrics program at Children's Hospital at Erlanger, a regional tertiary/quaternary referral center with a Level IV NICU, Level I pediatric trauma center, 18-bed PICU, and a high-volume pediatric ED, giving residents exposure to high-acuity subspecialty and critical care medicine despite the program's community orientation. The X+Y (3+1) block structure, four-week intern bootcamp, and a longitudinal continuity clinic (150+ families per resident) are built explicitly to simulate the rhythms of private pediatric practice while protecting inpatient learning time, and a faculty-to-resident ratio exceeding 2:1 supports close clinical supervision. Research is present but auxiliary rather than central: residents get structured research/QI time during ambulatory weeks and an early "Intro to Research" bootcamp session, but the program's outcome data show it functions as a launching point for both community practice and subspecialty fellowship rather than a research pipeline. Graduate outcomes are split almost evenly between general pediatrics (89% of whom enter private practice, largely across the Southeast) and fellowship training across a wide range of subspecialties, indicating the program values broad clinical competency and flexibility over a fixed academic or research trajectory.
