USC/LA General Medical Center Pathology is a university-affiliated, safety-net-anchored program built around three-quarters of training at LA General, one of the busiest public academic hospitals in a highly diverse county, supplemented by complex oncologic surgical pathology at Keck Hospital, pediatric/molecular pathology at CHLA, and forensic training at the LA County Medical Examiner's office. High case volume (7 million lab examinations annually, 146,000 AP specimens) combined with early graduated autonomy under attending oversight defines the clinical experience. The program explicitly prepares residents for both academic and community practice, with research described as strongly encouraged rather than mandatory, and a substantial share of graduates pursue in-house or affiliated fellowships (surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, forensics, pediatric pathology) before dispersing into academic and private practice roles across Southern California and beyond.
