UCLA's Pathology (AP/CP) program sits within an academic, research-intensive Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine that offers an extensive suite of subspecialty fellowships (cytopathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, molecular genetic pathology, neuropathology, transfusion medicine, laboratory genetics and genomics, GI/liver, immunogenetics) and formal MD/PhD pipelines (STAR, MSTP with Caltech) reflecting deep integration of clinical training with basic and translational science. Trainee scholarly output is showcased at major national meetings (USCAP, CAP, ASCP, ASHI, ACMG) with work in nanopore HLA typing, spatial transcriptomics, and transplant immunology, signaling an expectation of active research participation rather than passive exposure. Alumni outcomes split between academic faculty appointments (USC, UC Irvine, UT Southwestern, UCLA) and subspecialized clinical practice (Kaiser Permanente, reference laboratories, private pathology groups), indicating the program prepares residents for both academic subspecialization and high-level community/reference lab practice.
