Program Identity & Fit

This is a four-year combined AP/CP program at a safety-net academic medical center affiliated with Case Western Reserve University, defined by extremely high diagnostic volume (25,000-30,000 surgical specimens, 20,000+ cytology cases, over 2 million lab specimens annually) drawn from a socioeconomically and culturally diverse patient population regardless of ability to pay. Training emphasizes hands-on, graduated-responsibility exposure across surgical pathology, cytopathology, autopsy (minimum 30 cases), and the full spectrum of clinical pathology, supplemented by outside rotations at the Medical Examiner's Office, University Hospitals, and Cleveland Clinic. Scholarly activity is built into resident expectations (regional/national presentations, publications, book chapters) and supported by dedicated educational/travel funds, but the program's stated outcomes point toward both academic and community fellowship placement rather than a physician-scientist pipeline. The program explicitly values inquisitive, independent diagnostic thinkers who thrive in a collegial, close-knit department and can absorb administrative/laboratory-management responsibility alongside diagnostic training.
