This is an integrated Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency spanning three RWJBarnabas Health/Rutgers-affiliated teaching hospitals - Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (tertiary, suburban, 600+ beds), Newark Beth Israel (urban), and Monmouth Medical Center (mixed urban/suburban) - giving trainees deliberately varied practice settings and specimen volumes (25,000 surgical specimens, 10,000 cytology specimens, 6 million clinical tests annually at CBMC alone). The program is embedded in New Jersey's largest academic health system, with Rutgers Cancer Institute ties, grant-funded research opportunities, meeting-attendance funding for residents presenting research, and an explicit expectation of academic productivity including peer-reviewed publication. Career framing centers on producing community-engaged, laboratory-medicine-competent pathologists rather than an overtly subspecialty-fellowship pipeline, though elective time and multi-site subspecialty exposure support fellowship preparation. Notably, the program does not participate in the NRMP Match, instead running its own faculty-ranked interview and selection process outside the Match timeline.
