Henry Ford Macomb's Orthopaedic Surgery Residency is a five-year osteopathically-rooted program housed within the oldest continuous osteopathic orthopedic training lineage in the country (originating at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in 1919), now operating under ACGME accreditation within the larger Henry Ford Health system. The curriculum is built around rotations at a community-based Level II trauma center in suburban Detroit, supplemented by strategic away rotations for subspecialty exposure otherwise unavailable locally - pediatric orthopedics at Cincinnati Children's, trauma at Emory/Grady, and additional case volume at Henry Ford Wyandotte. Research is present but modest, limited to one dedicated block each in the PGY-3 and PGY-5 years, indicating the program is structured primarily to produce broadly competent, case-diverse general orthopedic surgeons rather than academic investigators. As a founding member of the Michigan State University GME Alliance, the program signals a continued commitment to blending osteopathic training traditions with allopathic residents, valuing broad clinical exposure and adaptability across trauma, sports, spine, hand, and reconstructive subspecialties.
