Program Identity & Fit

DHR Health's Orthopaedic Surgery Residency is based at a physician-owned, safety-net health system on the US-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley, serving a socioeconomically diverse and underserved regional population. The program explicitly frames its mission around training clinicians, scholars, educators, and future leaders capable of serving rural and under-represented populations, with graduated autonomy under faculty supervision and subspecialty faculty coverage spanning sports medicine, trauma, hand/upper extremity, pediatric orthopaedics, musculoskeletal oncology, and foot and ankle. Scholarly activity is institutionally emphasized (over 300 resident/fellow scholarly activities system-wide in the current academic year), positioned alongside quality improvement, patient experience, informatics, and leadership training as core educational components beyond clinical medicine. The program values residents oriented toward community service, cross-cultural care of a border and underserved population, and career paths toward ABOS certification with potential emphasis on research, education, or administration.
