Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is the ophthalmology department for Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, consistently ranked the #1 eye hospital nationally and the top-ranked residency program by Ophthalmology Times and Doximity, positioning it as the flagship academic and research powerhouse of the specialty. Training centers on an extraordinarily broad clinical base: a dedicated 24/7 ophthalmic emergency department functioning as a community safety net, a weekly resident continuity clinic with dedicated staff and in-house laser/imaging suites, and rotations spanning Jackson Memorial, Ryder Trauma, Holtz Children's Hospital, and the VA, giving residents primary-surgeon experience across every subspecialty (cornea, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, pediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology) by PGY3-4. Research is deeply embedded via the McKnight Vision Research Center's dozens of labs, ~70 active clinical trials, and structured PhD/MD-PhD and post-doctoral pathways, reflecting an institutional identity built as much on scientific discovery as clinical volume. The program funds an international elective, offers extensive named fellowships in nearly every subspecialty, and explicitly credits a "Norton Principles" culture of shared values and mentorship in selecting residents who will become subspecialty leaders and academic ophthalmologists.
