Montefiore Einstein Ophthalmology is a university-affiliated, research-intensive academic program based in the Bronx, built on a "bench-to-bedside" model that has historically produced FDA-approved innovations (Trabectome, Eylea, Macugen) and continues active investigator- and sponsor-initiated clinical trials across every subspecialty. The department holds a Cochrane Eyes and Vision NEI/NIH-funded designation as one of 13 centers worldwide for evidence-based vision care, and residents train alongside physician-scientists engaged in retina, uveitis, cataract/IOL, and cornea research using AI, biologics, and regenerative medicine platforms. Residents are drawn predominantly from strong US MD programs (many Einstein-affiliated), reflecting a pipeline oriented toward academic subspecialty careers rather than community-based general ophthalmology.
