Program Identity & Fit

Virtua's Ob/Gyn Residency is a young community-based program (established 2021) newly affiliated with Rowan University, training residents across Virtua Voorhees and Virtua Mount Holly hospitals in a high-volume obstetric and gynecologic surgical environment, including exposure to maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology/reconstructive pelvic surgery, reproductive endocrinology, and gynecologic oncology. The curriculum builds a structured, mandatory research pathway across all four years (mentor identification in PGY1, proposal development in PGY2, project completion in PGY3, dissemination in PGY4), reflecting an expectation of scholarly output rather than a purely clinical focus. Robotic surgery (da Vinci 5), progressive chief responsibilities, and rotations spanning two hospital systems suggest an emphasis on developing well-rounded generalist surgeons prepared for either community practice or fellowship, within a broader health system that explicitly prioritizes community health equity, access, and service to an underserved South Jersey population. The program values residents who can function within team-based, patient safety-oriented care models and who are drawn to leadership in addressing community health disparities alongside clinical training.
