Program Identity & Fit

Rush's OBGYN residency is an academic, urban program based on Chicago's West Side, serving a diverse, community-facing patient population while maintaining an academic hospital infrastructure and additional urban/suburban training sites. The curriculum builds broad generalist competency with early family planning and surgical exposure, dedicated advocacy training, and structured scholarly activity requirements (Resident Research Day, QI projects, medical education pathway) rather than a research-first identity. The program explicitly foregrounds reproductive justice, LGBTQIA+ and gender-affirming care, and health equity work, and repeatedly signals that it recruits residents who arrive with existing advocacy experience and wish to continue it. Career preparation is dual-track, explicitly stated as readying residents for both subspecialty fellowship and academic or private practice, with a culture emphasis on collective support, teaching, and community-oriented mission over intense investigator training.
