Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, university-sponsored OB/GYN residency at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola, a high-volume regional referral center that delivers more babies than any other hospital in its two-county area and serves as Northwest Florida's only Level III NICU and Regional Perinatal Center. The program's stated mission is explicitly generalist and mission-driven, training obstetrician-gynecologists to practice in rural, underserved, and medically-vulnerable communities of Northwest Florida and Southeast Alabama, with tracked outcomes including how many graduates settle in smaller suburban/rural practice. Residents gain broad subspecialty exposure (MFM, GYN oncology with an MD Anderson-affiliated cancer center, REI, FPMRS) without competing fellows on most services, in a small six-per-class program emphasizing close faculty interaction and individualized supervision rather than large-institution volume alone. The program values clinical and surgical generalism, community responsiveness, and scholarly engagement (structured research curriculum, protected didactics) over a research- or subspecialty-fellowship identity.
