CAMC's OB-GYN residency is a non-pyramidal, four-year program (three residents per level) at a large, university-affiliated tertiary referral center that serves as the region's primary destination for high-risk obstetrics and gynecologic oncology, drawing transfers and referrals from across West Virginia. The absence of any in-house OB-GYN fellowships means residents themselves absorb the subspecialty volume, gaining direct hands-on exposure to high-acuity pathology alongside routine continuity clinic management and community-based surgical cases performed with local private obstetrician-gynecologists serving as associate faculty. Research is institutionally supported through the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine's Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research, an annual Research Day with resident/student presentations, and WVCTSI partnerships, positioning research as an expected component of training rather than its central mission. The program frames its explicit goal as preparing residents for a dual identity as primary women's health physicians and surgical consultants, valuing broad clinical competence, independent surgical judgment developed under graduated supervision, and comfort managing both routine and complex referral pathology in a rural/underserved regional context.
