Program Identity & Fit

This is a newly integrated seven-year academic neurosurgery program formed from the 2025 merger of Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, training across four major Harvard-affiliated sites including Boston Children's Hospital, and positioning itself as one of the largest and most resource-rich neurosurgical departments in the world. Clinical training is organized around named subspecialty tracks—brain tumor, vascular, functional, pediatric, peripheral nerve, skull-base, and spine—each paired with a dedicated senior faculty leader, reflecting a structure built for subspecialty mastery rather than generalist community practice. Two full years are protected for laboratory-based research, clinical fellowship, or an additional advanced degree, with access to Dana-Farber, Broad Institute, Wyss Institute, HMS, HSPH, and MIT, signaling that scholarly output and academic career-building are embedded in the training pathway rather than optional add-ons. The program explicitly frames its mission as producing academic and clinical leaders in neurosurgery, and residents are expected to present research nationally (AANS, CNS) and to teach and mentor Harvard medical students.
