Sutter Roseville Medical Center's Internal Medicine Residency is a new, community hospital-based program (13 residents/year) built around a 382-bed tertiary-capable facility with Level II trauma, accredited stroke, and 24-hour cath lab services, serving a large catchment stretching from the Sacramento suburbs to the Oregon and Nevada borders. Its identity is explicitly "broad-based," preparing residents for primary care, hospitalist practice, or fellowship rather than steering toward any single outcome, with a self-described close-knit, familial faculty culture layered onto Sutter Health's not-for-profit, community-benefit mission. Research is structured but foundational rather than central: a required scholarly project, a built-in Scholarly Activity Curriculum (biostatistics, study design, critical appraisal), IRB mentorship, and an annual symposium support case reports, QI work, and IRB-approved projects rather than hypothesis-driven investigation. As an inaugural program shaped directly by medical staff demand, it emphasizes humanistic, curious, adaptable physicians who fit a collegial community-hospital environment over pedigree or subspecialty research output.
